Ayurveda & Acupuncture  Indian edition

available from Chaukhamba Sanskrit Pratishthan, Delhi, India. ISBN  978-81-7084-640-6

Sushruta Samhita, Chpt V : 5

Spanish version

" Ayurveda, as a science, belongs to India. It is the oldest surviving system of medicine in the world. Its origins have been traced back more than 5000 years. It is believed that the concepts of Ayurveda were known to the people of the Indus Valley Civilization. The science was significantly developed during the Vedic period of our history. We know that in the 5th Century the erudite treatises of the greatest of our Vaidyas, Sushruta and Charaka were translated from Sanskrit into Chinese and in 700 A.D. Chinese scholars were studying medicine in India at the University of Nalanda. By the 8th Century, these texts were translated into Arabic and Persian. We see that Arabic works derived from our Ayurvedic texts reached Europe by the 12th Century."

Speech by the President of India, Shri Pranab Mukherjee (13th President) at the 58th Session of the All India Ayurvedic Congress in Chandigarh. March-2015.

" A real pleasure having taken part in this course and having studied this knowledge that I now use daily  in my practice."

Dr. M. Burgos.MD , Marmapuncturist, South America

In fact, [the] 24 channels (meridians) are nothing else than Sushruta’s 24 Dhamanis while [the] points on channels are the 700 Siras of Sushruta*.Sushruta  has very authentically mentioned that Siras are embedded in Dhamanis. Similarly, external Marmas are also composed of these Siras. (2)  Drs. Joshi, Shah & Joshi

You can learn how to regulate the body’s flow of energy (Prana) via the energetic pathways (nadis) in order to balance the functions of the mind and body through the Ayurvedic principles of  Siravedhana or Ayurvedic Acupuncture.

Ayurvedic Acupuncture is a little-known branch of  Ayurvedic medicine which has a long history of use in India and surrounding countries. It is known by various names including siravedhana, marmapuncture, suchi-karma, suchi-chikitsa etc.It is also known in Sri Lanka as  Vidum Pillissum Vedakama(1) (lit. needling-moxa-treatment) which is a special branch of medicine performed for curing severe diseases by puncturing and heating vital points on the body.

"In fact, this knowledge [acupuncture] already got passed to the nearby countries around India mainly during 'Buddha' period. It is not a coincidence that almost all Buddhist countries have this knowledge and it is the Indian fortune that the origin of this knowledge is from India." (2) (Drs. Joshi, Shah & Joshi).

Using Ayurvedic medical theory (of  Prana, Tridoshas, Trigunas, 5 Elements and the Ayurvedic method of diagnosis and disease process) the practitioners of Ayurvedic acupuncture develop a method of selecting acupoints on the skin with the use of filiform needles and based on the client’s individual constitution (prakruti) and the presenting dis-ease (vrikruti) in order to balance the human organism and maintain health.

Ayurvedic acupuncture is the ancient Ayurvedic method of using needles suchis (sūci सूचि)  at specific points of the body to effect therapy, more specifically the healing ability of the body to effect its cure. Such system based on Ayurveda has been practised for thousands of years in India and later outside of India (including Sri Lanka and Tibet). Many ancient texts relate to this therapy (including the Suchi Veda- science of needling) and specifically practised by the ancient surgical and acupuncture school of Sushruta- the Dhanvantari School and written about in the ancient text, the Sushruta Samhita  over 2500 years ago.

" It is very interesting to note that [in] ancient texts by Charaka, Sushruta and Vaghbatta we find details of what is known as 'Suchi-Chikitsa' [needle treatments] akin to acupuncture. These Ayurvedic texts also describe some 107 points on the human body called 'Marmas' where the needles were inserted."

Dr. C.L. Nagpal. Modern Acupuncture. IAT&RI, Popular Printers, Jaipur, India. PREFACE.

Ayurvedic acupuncture (the word 'acupuncture' itself comes from the Latin, acus-needle and  punctūra- puncture) was referred to as siravedhana (sirāvedhana सिरावेधन piercing of pranic vessels) -needling of acupoints (sirā सिरा) during ancient Rgveda and Atharvaveda periods and later flourished in Samhita period. (4)

Today it is an up-to-date therapy which can be used in a modern clinic setting.

While there are traditionally  107 vital zones or marmas in Ayurveda, there are also over 700 acupoints or siras, according to Sushruta, some of which relate to the marmas but all of which can be used  for needling in Siravedhana or Ayurvedic Acupuncture

Ayurvedic Acupuncture

It is a misguided belief to assume  that the knowledge of Ayurvedic acupuncture (siravedhana) is only useful when we utilize acupuncture  needles. This deep and ancient knowledge can also be used without needles by applying many different body therapies, including digital pressure (as in acupressure), heat (as in moxibustion) cold, laser,  magnets, electric stimulation and even Pranic healing (akin to reiki) to the sensitive points (acupoints) of the body (siras).

It has proved very useful in my practice

" In ancient India there was a similar treatment to acupuncture and even treatment by massage as well. In the old texts of Buddhism, the words acupuncture and moxibustion appeared sporadically and the famous physician of India, Giba [Jivaka]* is said in one of the texts such as the Chikitsa Vidya, to have been born with an acupuncture needle in the right hand and a drug container in the left hand in about the 5th century B.C."

Dr. Yoshiaki Omura. MD.               Acupuncture Medicine- Its Historical and Clinical Background. Japan Publications, Japan, 1996.(p.15).

"The modern acupuncture system owes its origin to Sushruta Samhita. History reveals that Sushruta dealt with the idea of a needling therapy in connection with Marmas- ‘vital points’. Marma treatment was used for therapeutic purpose in the old tradition of Sushruta."     (5)
